The University of London was founded in 1836 and is one of Europe's pre-eminent universities, equal to Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. It is a federation of 18 distinct, separate and, in many cases, multi-faculty Colleges, together with 11 specialist Institutes and an External Programme which is the University's principal distance learning provider.

The University offers Postgraduate courses by distance learning in Management, Finance & Economics, Information Systems, Law, Agriculture and Livestock, Health, Environment, Education, Geography and United States Studies. At this level the range of material and level of support provided to students varies dependent on the specific qualification.

In the majority of post graduate diplomas and degrees students receive everything they need in order to complete their study as a package or online. This may include text books, study guides or units, readers, audio/video tapes and the relevant Regulations and past examination papers. However, for the LLM and the MA Geography degrees students receive only an introductory pack of study material and limited direct academic guidance and are required to purchase their own text books.

Academic staff from the Lead College set assignments and give individual guidance and feedback. Recently developed courses are making full use of the new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and through it access to the University of London Library. Students are also encouraged to network with each other.
